"The dynamics of delivering information to audiences has changed forever due to technology. Today, consumers are more empowered than ever before. In order to serve them well, we must find ways to be more nimble. That means we have to change the way we deliver that news - not just in subtle ways, but in fundamental ways. We can't live in the past."

Dave Hunke

In announcing that the Detroit Free Press would limit subscription home delivery to Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

It's a pretty big deal when one of the ten largest metro areas in the United States no longer has daily newspaper delivery.  The death of daily newspapers is accelerating.  And to think my first job was as a paper boy at the age of 13.

The Detroit Free Press is in Detroit. That, is its main problem.

I predict that within the next 24 months that the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Chicago Sun Times, Dallas Morning News, Newsday will all limit home delivery in some form. All of them are outside of the top ten publications in size, have declining circulations of more then 5% per year for the past three years, and circulations not more then 20% larger than the Free Press. While a bit larger the San Francisco Chronicle will limit home delivery as well.

It is quite possible that within ten years that the only home delivery papers are The Wall Street Journal and The New York times.
