Jack is Addicted

Jack is my son. He is six. He is addicted to his PS2.

It is the first thing he wants to do when he gets home form school (homework comes first). He tries to sneak to the playroom to get in extra minutes first thing in the morning. Literally goes through withdrawals when we make him turn it off.

Something different happened yesterday. He came home and asked to play with “the snowman“. I had showed it to him and Kate the day before. They spent an hour playing with it and laughing out load. Simple and fun game.

I suppose I have my own addictions. I scored a 69 on this quiz. Hardcore Junkie.

Quiet Me

It has been about two weeks since I have posted. I have been paying attention to some things that are most likely not very interesting to anybody but me.

The one is some consulting work that I have been doing for AdLine. During the second half of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006 I worked with AdLine to prove that their out-of-home business model would work. It does and that business is ready to scale. In order to scale the company needs an infusion of cash. There is a strategic buyer that has a great interest in the business and understands the potential value of it. Dedicating a good deal of time in putting together a deal that works for everyone.

I have also been looking at a potential new gig. It does not seem right to talk about it until it is a done deal, but it will build upon my work at The Enfuse Group and position me well for some of my longer term career goals. More to come on that in the near future.

Bad Name, Great Service

EarthLink today announced that they are launching “DSL & Home Phone Service” Pretty catchy name. Netcom would have been better and followed recent practice.

With that said, this is a really really good product. I called EarthLink a month or so ago to ask if there was anyway to upgrade from my 1.5Mbps DSL service. That speed at $40 a month is no value.

Like lots of folks my telecommunications bill seems to be going up, not down. All in my family telecommuncations cost is somewhere around $250 a month, which is too much in my mind. So I was starting to look around to find some type of deal with Comcast or BellSouth to get higher speed and lower out of pocket costs.

Along comes EarthLink DSL & Home Phone Service, or Netcom if you prefer. The way I figure it I get to double my Internet connection speed, ditch BellSouth, get unlimited long distance and save about $40 a month in telecommunications cost. Thats a 16% savings that adds up to $500 a year.

It’s a great deal! I might have some obsure issues that stop me from using the service but it is still a great deal.

Now if they could get to work on that name….

Google Needs Marketing

Google launched “Google Apps for Your Domain” today.

Catchy name. Rolls right off the tongue.

Goolge Apps With your Domain would have been better. At least you could shorten it to GAWD.

The folks at Google need to take another look at the presentation Seth Godin gave to them a while back. To quote him “Technology gives you an opportunity to market.”

Google is not taking advantage of their technology opportunity with the naming of this service and overall brand architecture.

I’ll Pay For You Anytime

After losing out on some rather large profile deals to Google at AOL and MySpace, Microsoft announced a deal with Facebook.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  I bet they were sweet for Facebook.

I also would bet that we have reached a turning point in the search wars.

From a users perspective, Google, Yahoo, and MSN Search pretty much deliver similar search results.  At this point what matters is user lock in.  How does a search company achieve user lock in?  By either developing a massive online presence themselves or by doing distribution deals to become the default search provider.  Along those lines, I can not tell you the last time I went to www.google.com.  I just use that little search window in Camino.

And say all the bad things you want about Microsoft.  But they have at least two admirable qualities.  They hate to lose.  And they are persistent.

This is all starting to smell a little like 1997 to me.  I am not talking about a bubble.  I am talking Netscape making bold statements that the browser was going to become the operating system.  Microsoft getting they guns pointed in the right direction, and then Netscape being a bit too arrogant to get in and fight the war.  Where did Microsoft point those guns?  They bought distribution via ISPs and PC manufacturers.  Netscape went from 90% marketing share in 1996 to less then 1% today.

One of Microsoft’s core business is again being attacked.  This time it is Google making noises about attacking Office.  I expect Microsoft to respond by attacking Google’s core business.  Though not to Microsoft, Google is starting to lose a little market share.  I am not bashing Google, they just need to look out, the wicked witch of the northwest is sending an army of flying monkeys their way.

PS>  The title of this entry was inspired by a Bloc Party song called "This Modern Love" that I was jamming to as I was cruising down 400.  Here’s a live version.

We Are All Made Of Stars

I think it all started with Odeo. The star device in the logo thing.

Now they are shooting all over the place with PopSugar, Fanpop, and FavoriteThingZ. Not to be outdone Flock has the Flockstars and their t-shirts.

If this keeps up pretty soon we will have a whole galaxy.

Somebody should do a planet or something. Personally I like the sound of Pluto… if it is is still a planet.

Guy that owns the domain most likely wants something like $3 million for it.

BTW here’s the video. Jack still refers to Moby as “Helmet”.

Search Could Be Better

Lee Gomes an analysis (sub required) of the famed search data recently released by AOL.

What popped out at me was this:

How good is the Web with queries not involving naked celebrities? Users seem to think it needs improving, becuase in 47% of all searches, they didn’t click on any of the results presented to them.

AOL uses Google for search.

It’s been about eight years since I was introduced to Google search. Though I use Google and Yahoo interchangably and don’t see too much difference in the results, you would think that after all that time the relevance of a search result would be better then just over fifty fifty. Why is that?

A few possible reasons.

Creating smart search algorithms is incredibly hard. Thousands of the smartest people in the world just can’t get a better result. Maybe.

People are incredibly stupid. They can’t think like a computer (or a computer can’t think like them, see above) or they just don’t know what to ask for. As a person who spent 20 minutes trying to find a place to eat in Fayetteville GA, which is a pretty simple search task, I ain’t buying this one.

Google is semi-incredibly smart. Or at least shrewd. They have quarterly numbers to hit. How do they hit those numbers? Via PPC advertising. How to they get those clicks. It’s a functions of page views.

Google does not have to have the best search results relevance possible. It just needs to be good enough to stop people from switching to alternatives.

Just good enough equals more page views which equals more AdWord displays, which equals more click throughs, which equals more revenue.

Or maybe they just can’t get better search results.

Big Money

Boingo just raised $65 million. Bringing their total to date to $90 million. I had heard that something was in the works but that sure is a lot of money.

I am having a hard time seeing a 10x return on that.

But what do I know?
