I was out at the Braves game on Friday night to watch the home team take on the Mets. Smoltz was on the mound for the Bravos. We were having a debate on how many career wins he had. Tried to find the answer via our trusty Treo browsers.

No luck.

Felix Chung made a phone call to get the answer. 177.

He called the Auburn Help Line at 334-844-4244. It is staffed by the Tiger faithful that will answer questions about anything. I don’t see the business model there but it works.

Thanks to Dan The Man for having me out. Also ran into Ben Sabrin. Congrats to both of them and the entire JBoss team on the Red Hat deal.

BTW, the Braves lost. Fifteen straight division titles is looking a little distant at the moment.

On Net Neutrality Wagon

When it comes to things Internet I get it.

What I don’t get is companies like BellSouth, Verizon, and Comcast making statements that they need to charge companies such as Yahoo and Google incremental fees based on the bandwidth their users consume or the quality of service desired.

Helloooo. I a laready pay a nice monthly sum thank you, and I expect the folks with the pipe into my house to deliver the speed and volume of traffic that I pay for regardless of where I am going or what I am doing on the Internet. If they would deliver some value added service so that they were not just a pipe they would not have this problem.

Here is a nice video by Public Knowldge that lays things out pretty cleanly (tip of the hat to Gracey).

May Madness

The business plan I submitted made the cut for the GRA/TAG Business Launch Competition.

Now the real fun starts! As a semi-finalist my team and I get to make our case to a group of judges on the morning of May 3. They are going to select the final four.

I am very excited to share our story.

Time to get to work on the presentation.

Start-Up Council

When I left CipherTrust I started The Enfuse Group.

I was approached by Dean Travelino and Genna Keller about a bringing together a group of professional services companies to help out emerging companies in the Atlanta area. As this is right up Enfuse’s alley and am always interested in ways to grow the practice I readily agreed.

The Start-Up Council was born. It has generated a good deal of interest from entrepreneurs interested in a free consulting session.

It also generated the first ever press mention for Enfuse!

Blogged Down

It’s been a while since a have posted. Other more offline activities have lead me astray.

One of the more exciting of these is that the Georgia Research Alliance and Technology Association of Georgia are putting on a Business Launch Competition. I submitted an application for a company concept that I have been working on with some of my former partners in crime from MindSpring.

They are in the beginning of the judging process with a number of companies expected to get invited to make a presentation next week.

I am on pins and needles awaiting the results…..

Reincarnation

EarthLink announced today that it was bringing back the MindSpring brand.

One of the toughest days in my professional life was telling several thousand folks that had put their heart and soul into the brand that it was going away. Then six months nursing it into the grave.

I have mixed thoughts about bringing it back to life but pretty much settle on letting the dead sleep.

Here is what others think.

I hope the service does well.

Cam

Cam Lanier is a man I respect a great deal. He was recently honored as a Distinguished Entrepreneur. The guy has only been responsible for about 20 new ventures that created 15,000 jobs and an aggregate capital formation of something north of $9 billion.

Cam is not only very successful, he is a true Southern good ‘ol boy.

Here are some of Cam’s rules courtesy of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta. My comments are below his rules.

Raising dogs on paper” or “The power of the model will fool anyone, including Bubba!”

Anything can look good on paper. Except when you are training the dogs.

“Big boys and little boys can’t play in the same sandbox” and its corollary “Never do a 50/50 split.”

Large and small companies just have different strategies and values and 50/50 deals rarely work.

“It’s gonna take twice as long and twice as much money.”

Always. Start-up businesses never keep their original business plans.

“Management is everything.”

It’s important to understand your own capabilities and where you fit in a business.

“The first $50 million is the hardest.”

Amen to that.

“You can’t out-crook a crook.”

If you find yourself in business with someone who is dishonest either get them out or get yourself out immediately. Life is too short.

“If the ox is in the ditch, and everybody gathers ’round the ox, it’s time to double up.”

If everyone is still supporting a business during times of trouble then it’s time to buy in to a bargain. If they are not gathering around it might be time to go bottom fishing.

“There are only two things that make the world go ’round: the need to love and the need to be loved.”

You have to care about people or they won’t care about you and your business. And by the way, you can’t fake it.

“If you have recurring revenue, you must understand the ‘rule of 78’.”

I love recurring revenue models. Gotta hit your numbers early in the year and you must understand churn.

“Free cash flow is the only thing that really matters.”

If a business can’t buy itself over time, it isn’t worth owning.

“Everybody’s got a number.”

Entrepreneurs will quit working hard once they reach their number. A smart entrepreneur will know when they hit their number and know that it’s time to move on. My number is written down as a goal. Is yours?

Successful people do what unsuccessful people just won’t do.

Sething

I have know of Seth Godin since his Yoyodyne days. I have always thought that he was a little too cute and pretty much tuned him out after the Purple Cow thing.

I am sure Seth does not mind because he most likely has not thought of me at all.

Well I was wrong.

The good folks over at The Church of the Customer blog pointed me to a presentation that Seth gave to goog recently.

The dude is brilliant. He thinks just like me. : )

I remember giving a presentation once at a sales meeting and saying that “everthing that the company does is marketing”. I was shot down in a room of about 100 people by the CEO saying “that narrows it down.”

Seth’s statement in the presentation that every person in the company is a marketer is so so true.

I also agree 100% that the key to great marketing is making something worth talking about.

Seth now has a new blog subscriber. I was so off base, perhaps one day I will meet him and tell the story.

Pass or Fail

I just took Guy Kawasaki’s Entrepreneurial IQ Test.

I scored 70-89%. Not sure if that is a B+ or nearly a D. The results page just said my score was “Solid.” My highest score was in the area of Product Development.

Give it a whirl and let me know the results.

I do think I will buy Guy’s new book based on Dharmesh’s endorsement.
